Traffic Safety Board

Mission

The Oswego County Traffic Safety Board (OCTSB) is committed to fostering cooperation and partnerships between law enforcement, community members, and safety organizations to improve traffic safety throughout Oswego County.

To achieve this, the OCTSB coordinates and directs local activities related to the implementation of the New York State Highway Safety Program (as approved by the governor or designee under NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law 1675(8)).

What we do

✅ Promoting & Encouraging Traffic Safety

We strive to raise awareness about the importance of safe road practices by providing education on traffic safety to drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians. Our initiatives focus on safe driving habits, the use of seat belts, the dangers of distracted driving, and other essential safety precautions. We engage with local schools, businesses, and community groups to reach individuals of all ages and backgrounds, ensuring that everyone understands how to protect themselves and others on the road.

✅ Developing County-Wide Highway Safety Programs

OCTSB works to create and coordinate comprehensive traffic safety programs across Oswego County. We collaborate with local agencies, schools, and community organizations to address the specific safety needs of the county. These programs aim to reduce traffic-related incidents, including speeding, impaired driving, and pedestrian accidents, while promoting safe behavior through awareness campaigns, training sessions, and events. Our goal is to ensure that all road users, regardless of their mode of transportation, have access to the resources and information they need to stay safe.

✅ Collaborating with Local Officials

We work closely with local government officials, law enforcement, and other stakeholders to implement and enforce traffic safety measures. This collaboration allows us to identify areas of concern, such as high-risk intersections or stretches of road, and address them through targeted enforcement and public education efforts. By supporting local officials in executing traffic safety initiatives, we help ensure that policies and programs are effective and tailored to the unique needs of our community.

Our Programs

Traffic Safety Education

The Oswego County Traffic Safety Board offers presentations for schools, agencies, and community groups on topics like Distracted & Drowsy Driving, Car Seat Safety, Pedestrian & Bicycle Safety, and more. We also host Bicycle Rodeos, where kids learn safe riding skills and bike safety checks.

Car Seat Distribution Program

This program is intended for income eligible residents of Oswego County who are in need of a car seat. Proof of eligibility is required, along with an application. This program is made possible using funds from the NYS GTSC.

If you are approved to receive a car seat from OCTSB, you can then schedule your appointment with a certified CPS technician to go over how to properly install your car seat!

If you are in need of a car seat, fill out the application here. Email the completed application to oswgtsb@icpoc.org or mail it to 317 W. 1st St. Ste. 111, Oswego, NY 13126.

Car Seat Check Events

Throughout the year we partner with other organizations to host car seat check events. At these drive-through events, we have CPS technicians available to check every car seat that comes through! You will leave one of our events knowing that your child is safe as they ride in the car.

If you are interested in getting your car seat checked by a CPS technician, check our Facebook to see if there is an event coming up. You can also reach out to us by phone or email to set up a private appointment with a CPS technician

Coordinator

My name is Taylor McLaughlin

I provide support to low-income households by supplying them with car seats as well as car seat checks. I educate in elementary and middle schools regarding pedestrian and bicycle safety. I also provide education in high school drivers education classes regarding backseat bullets, distracted driving and speeding. When I'm not in school, educating I'm in the community at events or doing a bike rodeo. When I’m not working, I enjoy diving into a new book or watching a good movie. I love spending time with my cat, Iris, and hitting the gym to stay active. If you ever have questions about traffic safety, feel free to reach out — I’m happy to help!
