According to the 2008 Oswego County Child Care Community Needs Assessment there is a potential demand for 13,401 child care slots in Oswego County and only 2,389 licensed and registered slots. Add to that number the 1229 unregulated pre-school slots, Universal Pre-K, and Legally-Exempt programs and there are still only 3,909full and part-time child care slots in Oswego County. That data translates to a demand of approximately 2.42children for every available child care slot. The most frequently cited reasons for inability to make child care arrangements include:
- No openings, particularly for infants;
- Transportation
- scheduling difficulty, especially for evening care and part-time care.
To address the on-going need for child care in 2008 the Oswego County Child Care Council staff will continue to recruit new child care providers throughout the county, focusing on the eastern half of the county where there are fewer providers. In addition, staff will continue to work with the Region III Infant/Toddler Network and existing programs/providers to encourage the expansion of infant slots. The Child Care Council will continue to assist new and existing child care programs to expand hours which include evening care options.
