Radon is a cancer-causing natural radioactive gas that you can't see, smell, or taste. The  U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) assigned all counties within the U.S. a Radon Zone of 1 to 3. The zone is assigned according to the predicted average indoor radon screening level. Zone 1 has the highest and Zone 3 the lowest. In Oswego County Zone 1 areas have been identified in New Haven, Orwell, Richland, Sandy Creek, and Scriba.

 

While testing is recommended for everyone in Zone 1, Oswego County Zone 1 Day Care Providers are required to have radon testing done. If you are a registered child care provider and have not received a radon information packet from our office, please call the Oswego County Child Care Council at 343-2344 and we will send one out to you.

 

Providers may order radon test kits at a special discounted rate by calling the New York State Department of Health at 1-800-458-1158 or their direct line, (518) 402-7556.
